The boys celebrated the 10th anniversary in 1982 with "The Second Decadennal Field Trip," and plans were made for "The Third Decadennal Field Trip" in 1992 until Jerry collapsed from exhaustion and had to cancel the shows, leaving thousands of Deadheads with airfare to Oregon for a show that would never happen. Happily, Jerry recuperated in time for Halloween shows in 1992 with JGB, and the Dead returned triumphantly in December with shows in Denver and Tempe which yielded the first performance of The Beatles' "Rain" and the much-anticipated return of "Here Comes Sunshine." Sunshine Daydream, a film documenting the Field Trip, paints an idyllic picture of what it must have been like to participate in this family affair. You can catch screenings for a limited engagement at Makor in New York City, August 17-20 (212-601-1000). Watch for the DVD release in the spring of 2003. To commemorate what would be "The Fourth Decadennal Field Trip," here's the legendary Field Trip in it's entirety, warts and all. |
